The Shuchi Nanna Maitri scheme is managed by the Department of Health and Family Welfare. It was rolled out as a specialized pilot initiative in Dakshina Kannada and Chamarajnagar districts. The primary objective is to promote sustainable, hygienic, and scientific menstrual health management. Kannada actress Sapthami Gowda serves as the official brand ambassador for the scheme. She actively advocates for breaking social taboos and adopting eco-friendly menstrual practices. The pilot program replaces single-use sanitary pads with reusable medical-grade silicone cups. Awareness workshops are conducted alongside product distribution to educate adolescent students.

Target Beneficiaries, Coverage, and Environmental Impact

The initiative specifically targets young girls enrolled in pre-university (PU) colleges. Under this initiative, high-quality menstrual cups are supplied completely free of cost. Around 15,000 eligible female students across the two pilot districts receive the cups. This includes approximately 11,500 students in Dakshina Kannada and 3,500 in Chamarajnagar. The shift provides an economical alternative while drastically reducing non-biodegradable sanitary waste. Students receive structured clinical guidance on proper cup sterilization, insertion, and maintenance. Following the evaluation of this pilot phase, plans include expanding the program across Karnataka.Official notifications and healthcare updates are documented by the Karnataka Health Department.
