Overview, Objective, and Institutional Scope
The Gelathi scheme is a dedicated welfare and rehabilitation program implemented in Karnataka. It specifically focuses on the comprehensive rehabilitation and economic empowerment of acid attack victims. The initiative addresses the severe physical, social, and financial vulnerabilities faced by survivors. By supporting self-reliance, the scheme assists victims in establishing sustainable livelihood activities. It operates alongside established institutional support systems, including specialized hospital treatment units. These integrated support systems provide medical, psychological, and legal assistance under a single umbrella. The overarching goal is to restore social dignity and long-term economic security to survivors.
Financial Assistance, Funding Structure, and Livelihood Support
Under the scheme, beneficiaries are entitled to a total financial assistance package of ₹5 lakh. The financial package is structured into two equal components of direct subsidy and credit support. A direct financial assistance (grant/subsidy) of ₹2.5 lakh is provided to the survivor. The remaining ₹2.5 lakh is extended as an institutional loan component. This balanced funding mechanism enables beneficiaries to set up self-employment ventures. The capital covers essential startup costs, equipment, and working capital for micro-enterprises. State welfare agencies oversee the transparent sanctioning, disbursement, and monitoring of the funds. This financial framework ensures sustainable income generation to safeguard long-term living standards.
