  • Appemidi is a traditional mango cultivar of Karnataka.
  • It is primarily grown in the Malenadu region of Karnataka.
  • The name “Appemidi” means “Tender Mango” in Kannada.
  • It is popularly known as the “King of tender mangoes.”
  • It is highly valued by the pickle industry.
  • Mainly used to prepare the famous “Appe Midi Uppinakayi” (tender mango pickle).
  • GI Tag: Awarded on 4 September 2009.
  • GI registration was obtained through the Department of Horticulture, Bengaluru.
  • The GI registration was granted by the Geographical Indication Registry, Chennai.
  • Appemidi was the first mango variety from Karnataka to receive a GI tag, before Kari Ishad mango.
  • Exam point: Appemidi = Karnataka + Malenadu + Tender mango + Pickle + GI (2009).
