- Bangalore Blue is a variety of fox grape (Vitis labrusca).
- It is mainly grown in Karnataka, particularly around Bengaluru.
- It is one of the three major grape varieties of Karnataka:
- Bangalore Blue
- Thomson Seedless
- Anab-E-Shahi Dilkush
- Cultivated for about 150 years in:
- Bengaluru Urban
- Chikkaballapur
- Kolar
- Major cultivation area: about 5,000 ha.
- Mainly cultivated in the Nandi Valley.
- Special feature: Has a characteristic “foxy flavor” and soft skin.
- Closely related to the American Concord grape.
- Suitable growing conditions:
- Soil: Red sandy loam
- Day temperature: 35–37°C
- Night temperature: 12–15°C
- These climatic conditions are particularly suitable around the Bengaluru region.
- Major uses:
- Fresh/raw consumption
- Jams and jellies
- Juice and juice concentrates
- Fortified wines
- GI Tag: Received in 2013.
- GI registration was proposed by the Department of Horticulture.
- Registration was made under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999.
- Exam point: Bangalore Blue = Vitis labrusca + Karnataka + Nandi Valley + GI 2013.
